Toxic Plastic Microbeads Banned in the US

toxic microbeads

Plastic toxic microbeads have finally been banned for use in personal care products in the United States. For years, we have lobbied for this legislation, due to the toxic nature of these beads to humans, as well as their effect on the water supply and water ways in the United States. On December 31st, President Obama signed into law the prohibition of the manufacturing of products containing microbeads. A microbead is a small plastic material, usually round in shape, that is used for exfoliation and cleansing. Typically, these beads are used in body washes, face scrubs and toothpastes, and subsequently washed down the drain. They pose a great threat to aquatic life, as researchers have found them all throughout the waterways in the United States.

Made from Earth has never used microbeads in any of our products. We have two products that use Jojoba Beads - our Grapefruit Glycolic Wash and our Rooibos Tea Detox Scrub. Jojoba Beads provide gentle and effective exfoliation because they do not cause irritation or microlacerations. They come from jojoba extract to create a jojoba ester. Jojoba beads are 100% biodegradable and are not part of the micro-bead ban.
